Joint Injections Q & A

What are joint injections?

A joint injection is a minimally invasive treatment used to relieve pain caused by an inflamed or irritated joint. During a joint injection appointment at Pain Medicine Inc, Dr. Khan administers medication directly into one or several joints using a hypodermic needle.

Once the medication enters your body, it goes to work, relieving pain and swelling. Joint injections usually don’t provide permanent relief, but they can minimize your symptoms for weeks or even months at a time.

What are the different types of joint injections?

At Pain Medicine Inc, Dr. Khan offers several types of joint injections, including:

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections

Platelet-rich plasma consists of the growth factors in your blood. During a PRP appointment, Dr. Khan draws a sample of blood and puts it into a machine called a centrifuge. The centrifuge spins around and separates your platelets from the rest of your blood. After completing this process, Dr. Khan injects the platelet-rich solution into an injured or irritated joint.

The PRP solution encourages circulation to the joint and triggers the production of new, healthy tissues and cells. In addition to relieving joint pain, Dr. Khan uses PRP injections to address premature hair loss and to improve age-related skin imperfections like wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots.

Epidural injections

An epidural injection provides temporary relief from back, neck, arm, or leg pain. The treatment process involves Dr. Khan administering an injection (with imaging guidance) into the epidural space surrounding your spine.

Once the medication enters the epidural space, it reduces swelling and pain in and around your spinal nerve roots. This encourages your body’s natural healing process while allowing you to maintain your mobility. An epidural injection can treat any type of back pain, including pain that affects the lumbar, thoracic, and cervical regions of your spine.

Facet joint injections

Facet joint injections relieve pain and irritation caused by damage to your facet joints, small bony structures that connect your vertebrae. This type of injection involves Dr. Khan administering a shot of anti-inflammatory medication directly into your spine.

What conditions can benefit from joint injections?
